Castellum's sustainability work is an internationally winning concept. Today, the Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark is released, for the sixth consecutive year naming Castellum as world leader in the category office / industry with 95 points out of 100 possible.
“Especially gratifying is that we are now also ranked as the world’s most sustainable office developer (with 99 points out of 100). It is solid proof that our strategy is right, that we do a really good job and that a strong focus on sustainability is profitable", says Filip Elland, head of sustainability at Castellum.
GRESB is an international benchmark tool that measures and evaluates the sustainability work of real estate companies and real estate funds. This year, a total of more than 1,540 real estate companies and funds in 64 countries are included, covering a large part of the globally listed real estate sector. These evaluations and analyzes are used by large investors to evaluate the world's real estate companies, including the Swedish AP funds, Blackrock, APG, and PGGM.
Put simply: investors can make informed decisions in order to make more sustainable investments, with the entire planet as the long-term winner.
Castellum's recipe for success can be broken down into three parts:
- That we work in a structured manner, follow up on an ongoing basis and make careful risk assessments. Sustainability is part of our culture, prioritized by the board and management as well as by managers and employees in the business, where we also involve customers and suppliers in our sustainability work.
- That sustainability is integrated both in everyday work and in the larger projects. These include energy efficiency, diversity, and a sustainability program for all investments, which also includes planning for solar cells on all buildings.
- That our sustainability goals are linked to the global goals and the sustainability challenges of the entire industry. As one of the first real estate companies in the world, we have adopted roadmaps with clear steps to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 throughout our value chain.
“It's always nice to win, but the success of GRESB weighs extra heavily. Personally, I see each individual sustainability investment as an important and necessary step to meet the Paris Agreement's goal that global warming should be limited to 1.5 ° C and contribute to a more sustainable society that stays within the planetary boundaries ", says Filip Elland.
Castellum's current sustainability projects include the recently started office property Infinity in Stockholm, which is the first project where we apply our roadmap to climate neutrality with climate-smart choices reducing climate emissions by up to 30%. Another of Castellum's sustainable projects is the world's first climate-neutral police building being built in Örebro entirely in wood and certified according to NollCO2 with the object of achieving a net zero climate impact during the life cycle. This summer, we also became the first in Scandinavia to enter into a partnership with the WELL Institute and start portfolio certification according to WELL, which focuses on the health and well-being of those who work in the buildings, and our solar cell program with the goal of building 100 larger solar plants by 2025 has already reached halfway.
Since 2007, Castellum has reduced energy use per square meter by 35%. We have in the same period reduced emissions per square meter by 80% in our property management. Today, our energy use per square meter is 46% lower than the industry average according to the Swedish Energy Agency. This is done through well-balanced energy projects and investments amounting to more than SEK 100 million per year in efficiency measures.
