Gateway Säve

Logistics and Mobility for Tomorrow

Here at Gateway Säve, 15 minutes from central Gothenburg and the largest port in the Nordic region, we are creating a globally unique site for sustainable logistics and mobility. Three million square metres of belief in the future. In the heart of one of northern Europe’s most dynamic and innovative industrial clusters. Welcome to the place where we will lead the world in developing sustainable logistics and mobility.

Latest news: Gateway Säve will be the site for the world's first electric aircraft production

Heart Aerospace is investing extensively in Gateway Säve and plans to establish a complete industrial facility for electric aircraft at Säve airport in the coming years. A venture that includes a new headquarters, R&D centre, and a facility for final assembly of aircrafts. Heart Aerospace develops the electrically powered passenger aircraft ES-30, which has generated orders worth several billion SEK. Currently, the company has around 130 employees and by the year 2025 it is expected to have around 500 employees.

"Gothenburg has distinguished itself as a driving force in electrification with world-class research facilities, such as SEEL, and has a large cluster of companies focused on battery and electric vehicle development. The ambition that Castellum and the City of Gothenburg have for Gateway Säve is truly unique and that is why we have decided to establish our new industry here," says Sofia Graflund, Chief Operating Officer at Heart Aerospace.

Three million square metres of belief in the future

Castellum acquired Säve Airport in December 2018, thus gaining access to a fantastic development site extending to just over 3 million square metres. Various aviation operations still take place on the site since domestic and international flights were discontinued in 2015. There are community aviation facilities, including helicopter operations for the police, ambulance and sea rescue, which provide a valuable service to the regional community. The site also offers flight training, private flights and corporate flights. Other tenants include Heart Aerospace, which is developing a Swedish electric aircraft for passengers.

Within a 10-year period we intend to develop Gateway Säve in stages and build around 800,000–900,000 square metres of state-of-the-art logistics and business premises, as well as test areas for zero-emission autonomous aircraft and road vehicles. Detailed development plans will be drawn up for the long-term development of the area. In 2021 we started the construction of SEEL – the Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory – and work begun on the first detailed development plan. In parallel with the long-term development of the site we also intend to create a cluster and test bed for innovation and development of the sustainable transport and mobility of the future.

Three focus areas

We have three main areas of focus for the development of Gateway Säve: Future aviation, autonomous zero-emission vehicles and flexible logistics. And as is always the case when Castellum develop workplaces, we put people first.

Our aim at Gateway Säve is to encourage growth in the electromobility cluster, and we believe that bringing in attractive players will attract others, lead to new collaborations and accelerate expansion on the site. We therefore intend to create spaces where our tenants can meet, exchange experiences and develop synergies. We will also ensure there are facilities for recreation and exercise in the area.

FUTURE AVIATION: At Gateway Säve, we are creating opportunities for the sustainable mobility solutions of the future to be developed and tested, on the ground and in the air. There is already a company here that is developing a fully electric passenger aircraft.

AUTONOMOUS ZERO-EMISSION VEHICLES: We enable technical innovation and development of the autonomous, zero-emission electric vehicles of the future by providing test sites. Our large asphalted areas are well suited for simulations and testing of various types of autonomous electric vehicles.

FLEXIBLE LOGISTICS HUB: This entails building large volumes of warehousing and logistics with the associated infrastructure for transshipment and autonomous electric transport on the site. Closeness to Scandinavia’s largest port in the best logistics location in Sweden makes this area ideal for establishing logistics operations. One possibility we are exploring is to enable companies to share resources on the site, such as space and vehicles. This would, for example, allow e-commerce to cope with peaks in demand and avoid excess capacity during the rest of the year.

Current aviation operations
There are community aviation facilities, including helicopter operations for the police, ambulance and sea rescue, which provide a valuable service to the regional community and will continue to do so for a long time. The site also offers flight training, private flights and corporate flights.

Sustainability – a natural choice

Sustainability – a natural choice

Sustainability will be a natural priority throughout the development of Gateway Säve. The goal is that the site will have net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 for operations and new construction as a whole.

We are planning for integrated energy provision using locally generated renewable energy and we will take a holistic approach to offset impact on ecosystem services. A surface water strategy will be developed to handle rainfall and water drainage on the site.

It is our ambition that everyone who visits and works at Gateway Säve will have access to a variety of mobility services, charging for electric vehicles, opportunities for recreation and exercise and meeting places for collaboration and socializing. It should also be easy to get to the area by public transport or bike.

We want to make it easier for our customers at Gateway Säve to run their businesses sustainably and we want everyone who works here to look forward to coming to work.

Site and location

Säve Airport site has a fantastic location close to the largest port in the Nordic region, as well as industry, national transport routes and the city of Gothenburg. Gothenburg has been voted the best logistics location in Sweden for many years and 70% of Scandinavia’s entire industry and population lies within a 500-kilometre radius of Gothenburg.

Our vision is that 5,000–8,000 people will work on this site when it is fully developed.

Already on site

The site already has several tenants. Companies from the logistics, automotive and aviation industries, as well as other industries, are already established on the Säve site. You are welcome to join us!
